Frequently Asked Questions

What is WHOIS?
WHOIS is a protocol for querying databases that store registered domain name information. It shows who registered a domain, when it was created, and when it expires.
Where does the data come from?
This tool uses the RDAP (Registration Data Access Protocol) which is the modern replacement for traditional WHOIS. Data comes from the official registrar databases.
Why is some information hidden?
Many domain registrars offer privacy protection services that mask personal information. This is normal and expected for most domains.
Can I check any domain?
You can check most common TLDs (.com, .net, .org, etc.). Some country-code TLDs may not have RDAP data available.
What does the expiry date mean?
The expiry date shows when the domain registration will lapse if not renewed. Domains should be renewed before expiry to avoid losing them. Most registrars send renewal reminders in advance.
What are nameservers?
Nameservers are DNS servers that store and serve DNS records for a domain. They determine where a domain's website and email are hosted. Changing nameservers is how you point a domain to a different hosting provider.
Is this the same as checking domain availability?
Not exactly. WHOIS shows registration details for domains that are already registered. If the lookup returns no data, the domain may be available for registration, but you should verify through a domain registrar.
