Frequently Asked Questions
What is an anagram?▾
An anagram is a word or phrase formed by rearranging the letters of another word or phrase, using each letter exactly once. Examples: "listen" → "silent", "astronomer" → "moon starer", "the eyes" → "they see". Anagrams have fascinated word lovers for centuries — they were used in codes, pen names (Voltaire is an anagram of AROUET L[e] J[eune]), and literary puzzles. Famous anagram: "To be or not to be: that is the question, whether tis nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune" contains an anagram for a longer phrase.
How does an anagram solver work?▾
The algorithm: (1) Sort the letters of the input word. (2) For each word in the dictionary, sort its letters. (3) If the sorted letters match, it's an anagram. More efficient approach: use a letter frequency fingerprint (character count map). Input "listen" has {l:1, i:1, s:1, t:1, e:1, n:1}. "Silent" has the same fingerprint. Anagram detection is O(n × k) where n = dictionary size, k = word length. For multi-word anagrams, the problem is NP-hard for large inputs — most solvers limit phrase length.
What are the best strategies for word games?▾
Scrabble tips: Look for common suffixes (-ING, -ED, -ER, -EST, -TION) and prefixes (UN-, RE-, OUT-). High-value letters (Q, Z, X, J) often pair well with common vowels. "QI" and "ZA" are valid Scrabble words. Bingo (using all 7 tiles) is worth 50 bonus points — look for -ING, -IES endings with your rack. Wordle tips: Start with words containing common letters (SLATE, CRANE, AUDIO). The most common letters in 5-letter words are E, A, R, O, T, L, I, S, N.

"Astronomer" ↔ "Moon starer". "Dormitory" ↔ "Dirty room". "The eyes" ↔ "They see". "Funeral" ↔ "Real fun". "Conversation" ↔ "Voices rant on". "Desperation" ↔ "A rope ends it". "The Morse Code" ↔ "Here come dots". "Slot machines" ↔ "Cash lost in me". "Eleven plus two" ↔ "Twelve plus one". "President Clinton of the USA" ↔ "To copulate, he finds interns". Names: Clint Eastwood ↔ "Old west action". George Bush ↔ "He bugs Gore". William Shakespeare ↔ "I am a weakish speller".
What is the difference between an anagram and a palindrome?▾
An anagram rearranges letters to form a new word. A palindrome reads the same forwards and backwards. "Race car", "level", "kayak", "noon" are palindromes. A word can be neither, one, or both. "Civic" is a palindrome but not an anagram of another word. "Listen/silent" are anagrams but not palindromes. "Aibohphobia" (fear of palindromes) is itself a palindrome. The longest common English palindrome is "detartrated" (11 letters). Pangrams use every letter of the alphabet: "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog."
